ABSTRACT

Transfusion of erythrocytes (RBC) to treat acute or chronic anemia has significant drawbacks, given the risks of transfusion, volunteer donor requirements, limited supply with increasing demand, especially during a pandemic such as COVID-19, and erythrocytes are often unavailable in emergency situations or where blood is not an option. Significant research has been undertaken for almost 100 years to attempt to replicate the functions of RBCs with oxygen carriers/oxygen therapeutics based on hemoglobin. Oxygen carriers that have been evaluated are hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs). HBOCs utilize hemoglobin (Hb) to transport oxygen around the body. Blood transfusion may be critical therapy in hemorrhagic trauma, various pathologies both acute and chronic, and surgical interventions. It has some important goals: the first and most important is to recover oxygen delivery to organs, additionally, when restoration of circulating blood volume is achieved, maintenance of adequate blood pressure to ensure enough blood flow to deliver the oxygen to the microcirculation and resolving oxygen debt. This chapter will review the history of HBOCs, discuss how HBOCs have been designed and how developed HBOCs differ from each other based on their pharmacology and physiology, highlight all major products to undergo human trials including one extensively studied product approved for human use in two countries (Hemopure), introduce newer products still under development, and finally present translational and clinical trials studying whether or not certain HBOCs may cause coagulation issues. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

ABSTRACT

Carbon-based inorganic nanomaterials (CINMs) which include carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene quantum dots (GQDs), graphene (G), graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and mesoporous carbon nanoparticles (MCNPs) have gained significant interest in biomedical application. The unique geometries (i.e., dimensions: 0D, 1D, 2D, 3D), chemical functionality/surface chemistry, and tunable physical properties of the CINMs make more interesting materials for theranostic applications. These properties of CINMs endowed their use in the delivery of therapeutics (drug/gene/biomolecules) for therapy and diagnostics (imaging/tracking) as an agent for cells and tissue imaging. In this chapter, we will highlight the recent advancement of CINMs and their tunable structure for various drug delivery and optical properties for imaging cells and tissues using different imaging modalities. Furthermore, we will summarize the CINMs role and promising applications for theranostic applications in infectious diseases such as tuberculosis (TB), influenza (H1N1), Ebola virus disease (EVD), Middle East respiratory syndrome virus (MERS), severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and other infectious diseases and also discuss the future perspectives to find the desirable platforms. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. ABSTRACT

The phenomenon of problematic mobile phone use has become increasingly common among adolescents during the lockdowns mandated by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, research is still scarce on the impact of such use on delinquent cyberspace conduct (i.e. cyberbullying). This study applies the theoretical framework of general strain theory to examine how problematic mobile phone use affects the perpetration of cyberbullying. The results of this empirical examination of longitudinal survey data obtained from 2,161 adolescents in South Korea reveal that problematic mobile phone use is positively associated with engagement in cyberbullying. It is a type of strain that induces negative emotional states and results in the perpetration of cyberbullying. Furthermore, this study investigates the moderating roles of both traditional bullying experiences (i.e. traditional bullying and victimisation) in the association between problematic mobile phone use and the perpetration of cyberbullying. We found traditional bullying perpetration positively moderates the effects of problematic mobile phone use on cyberbullying. On the other hand, we found the moderating effect of traditional bullying victimisation of adolescents was insignificant. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

ABSTRACT

Korea was liberated from Japan in 1945, but the war continued when North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950. After the war until the early 1970s, many people in South Korea suffered from hunger because there was not enough food;in particular, many sick people wandered around the streets and lived as beggars and social outcasts. At that time, Dr. Herbert Codington, a medical missionary sent from the Southern Presbyterian denomination in the United States, contributed greatly to the fight against tuberculosis and other diseases in South Korea. At the heart of his Christian spirituality was a strong affirmation of Jesus’ message that a person needs to be both spiritually and physically healthy in order to lead a whole, meaningful life. To this end, he preached the Gospel, while at the same time receiving minimal medical treatment himself and offering free treatment to poor Korean patients. His ideas about medical treatment at the time shocked Korean society, yet today, the South Korean government is still following his medical practices in many ways. This study will show that his medical ideas are very efficient in helping to deal with huge epidemics, such as Covid-19. © 2022, Ecozone, OAIMDD. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Recently, the bio-healthcare market is enlarging worldwide due to various reasons such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Among them, biometric measurement and analysis technology are expected to bring about future technological innovation and socio-economic ripple effect. Existing systems require a large-capacity battery to drive signal processing, wireless transmission part, and an operating system in the process. However, due to the limitation of the battery capacity, it causes a spatio-temporal limitation on the use of the device. This limitation can act as a cause for the disconnection of data required for the user's health care monitoring, so it is one of the major obstacles of the health care device. In this study, we report the concept of a standalone healthcare monitoring module, which is based on both triboelectric effects and electromagnetic effects, by converting biomechanical energy into suitable electric energy. The proposed system can be operated independently without an external power source. In particular, the wireless foot pressure measurement monitoring system, which is rationally designed triboelectric sensor (TES), can recognize the user's walking habits through foot pressure measurement. By applying the triboelectric effects to the contact-separation behavior that occurs during walking, an effective foot pressure sensor was made, the performance of the sensor was verified through an electrical output signal according to the pressure, and its dynamic behavior is measured through a signal processing circuit using a capacitor. In addition, the biomechanical energy dissipated during walking is harvested as electrical energy by using the electromagnetic induction effect to be used as a power source for wireless transmission and signal processing. Therefore, the proposed system has a great potential to reduce the inconvenience of charging caused by limited battery capacity and to overcome the problem of data disconnection.

ABSTRACT

We report the discovery of KMT-2020-BLG-0414Lb, with a planet-to-host mass ratio q (2) = 0.9-1.2 x 10(-5) = 3-4 circle plus at 1 sigma, which is the lowest mass-ratio microlensing planet to date. Together with two other recent discoveries (4 less than or similar to q/q (circle plus) less than or similar to 6), it fills out the previous empty sector at the bottom of the triangular (log s, log q) diagram, where s is the planet-host separation in units of the angular Einstein radius theta E. Hence, these discoveries call into question the existence, or at least the strength, of the break in the mass-ratio function that was previously suggested to account for the paucity of very low-q planets. Due to the extreme magnification of the event, A (max) similar to 1450 for the underlying single-lens event, its light curve revealed a second companion with q (3) similar to 0.05 and ;log s (3);similar to 1, i.e., a factor similar to 10 closer to or farther from the host in projection. The measurements of the microlens parallax pi (E) and the angular Einstein radius theta E allow estimates of the host, planet and second companion masses, (M (1), M (2), M (3)) similar to (0.3 M (circle dot), 1.0 M (circle plus), 17 M-J ), the planet and second companion projected separations, (a (perpendicular to,2), a (perpendicular to,3)) similar to (1.5, 0.15 or 15) au, and system distance D (L) similar to 1 kpc. The lens could account for most or all of the blended light (I similar to 19.3) and so can be studied immediately with high-resolution photometric and spectroscopic observations that can further clarify the nature of the system. The planet was found as part of a new program of high-cadence follow-up observations of high-magnification events. The detection of this planet, despite the considerable difficulties imposed by COVID-19 (two KMT sites and OGLE were shut down), illustrates the potential utility of this program.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to provide medical educators with insights into the current status and prospects of undergraduate medical education, which has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a database search of PubMed, Embase, and ERIC and identified articles on COVID-19-related undergraduate medical education. We independently reviewed titles and abstracts and extracted data on the geographic location of the study, area of specialty, phase in medical school (preclinical year, clerkship year, etc.), type of paper, and the main content of the study. RESULTS: A total of 49 articles published across multiple countries were included in this study. These were categorized as dealing with either (1) curriculum changes in undergraduate medical education due to COVID-19 or (2) student-led educational activities related to COVID-19. The 41 articles in the first category showed two main trends: replacing in-person lectures with online classes in the preclinical years and adopting various remote educational methods to compensate for the discontinued or truncated clerkship in the clinical years. The eight articles in the second category showcased various student educational activities that were conducted to meet the public's medical needs during the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: This review summarized the essential changes in undergraduate medical education worldwide and reflected on the various teaching methods adopted by medical schools. In preparation for the post-COVID era, a comprehensive online curriculum and evaluation tools are needed, which require the development of necessary infrastructure and adequate resources. Education aimed at helping students be more socially aware and responsible as medical professionals must be promoted.
